“Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy” è un brano natalizio cantato da Bowie insieme a Bing Crosby,
The Little Drummer Boy è una canzone di Natale scritta nel 1941. Il controcanto eseguito da Bowie, Peace on Earth, è stato scritto da Ian Fraser, Larry Grossman, e Alan Kohan, e aggiunto al brano originale specificatamente per questa esibizione.
Quando i produttori dello spettacolo Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas proposero a Bowie di partecipare alla trasmissione e duettare con Crosby sul brano The Little Drummer Boy, lui rispose che non l’avrebbe mai cantata: “detesto quella canzone. C’è qualcos’altro che potrei cantare?“. Per correre ai ripari, chiesero agli autori di scrivere una melodia di controcanto che sottoposero a Bowie e di cui fu entusiasta.
Bowie dichiarò in seguito di aver partecipato allo spettacolo soprattutto perchè sapeva quanto sua madre adorasse Bing Crosby.
Il brano fu registrato l’11 Settembre 1977 agli Elstree Studios vicino Londra e pubblicato come singolo molto dopo, il 27 Novembre 1982 (il lato B conteneva Fantastic Voyage). Curiosamente, ebbe un successo inaspettato arrivando al terzo posto delle classifiche inglesi e vendendo oltre 400.000 copie solo nel Regno Unito.
Appena un mese dopo la registrazione del duetto, Bing Crosby morì.
